Some ways you can get involved with Atco's Community Friends Program Winter 09, 20 hours or less

• Tuesday Rec Night at RollerBowl at 28 Palmer St (just off Mill St), in conjunction with Alpha Phi Omega. Starts on Tues Jan 6th, and continues through Tues Mar 17 th. We bowl from 4:30-6:00pm. We need volunteers to help keep score, socialize, to help people with techniques, and to just hang out. No commitment, just stop in whenever you are free on a Tuesday, we would love to have you join us !!! In the event of bad weather, please call Atco at 592-6659, ext 0, to see if Tues Rec Night is cancelled.

• The Atco Crafts Group meets on Tuesdays at the RollerBowl (during Tues Rec Night, see above), 4:30-5:45pm. This group is always looking for new folks to join them. $ .50 per week dues, bring a project to work on. We are also looking for a group to help sponsor and lead this group. If you know of a group that may be interested in helping with this activity please call Jeff Bierlein at Atco, 592-6659,ext 254 or email: bierlein@athenscbmrdd.orgStarts Jan 6th.

• Our “Dinner for Two” is tentatively scheduled for Sat Feb 28th, 4:30-9pm at the First Presbyterian Church at 2 N Court St. in Athens. This is an opportunity for the individuals we serve to go out for a romantic dinner, followed by a movie. We need all kinds of help, from cooks, decorating help, servers, greeters, clean up, chaperones at the movies, and volunteers to make a nice dessert. We also need chaperone couples to join us for dinner as well. This is a very special event for our associates and our community friends. Alpha Phi Omega helps with this event, other groups would be welcome. Please consider joining us !!! We also need a couple of individuals to play music during dinner, please let me know if you might be able to help in this regard, there is a piano in the room as well.

• Volunteers are needed to help with a Movement Dance class, which will be held at Putnam, date and time to be confirmed. No dance experience needed. One hour per week commitment.
  
• The Atco Valentine Dance will be held on Sunday Feb 15th, 5:30-7:30pm at the Baker Center Ballroom. This event is sponsored by the OU Security Aides. Let me know if your group wants to help sponsor this event and I will get you the contact with OU Security Aides. We will need lots of volunteers to come and dance !!!

• Wed Bowling League begins on Wed Jan 14th and runs for 8 consecutive Wednesdays. Each team is comprised of Atco associates and O.U. students. We bowl at Rollerbowl at 28 Palmer St (just off Mill St), from 5-7pm, cost is $3.00 per night. We need a firm commitment from you since your team will be relying on you. Alpha Phi Omega helps to sponsor this activity. Runs thru Mar 4 th.

• In honor of March is Mental Disabilities Awareness Month, we are having a Disability Awareness Festival at the Athens Community Center on Tuesday March 3 rd, 6:30-8:30pm. There will be lots of displays, and presentations by individuals with disabilities, music, poetry, and appetizers. We need volunteers to help the night of the event, clean up, bake cookies, and just come to learn more about individuals with disabilities. Email Jeff: bierlein@athenscbmrdd.org

• We need a group or individuals to chaperone "Movie Nights" during Winter Quarter. We meet at Movies 10 at 6:30pm one Tuesday each month. Cost is $4.00 for the movie. If you or your group is interested please let us know. Movie Nights are scheduled for Tuesday Jan 13 th, Tues Feb 10 th, and Tues Mar 10 th. Join us for the dates that work for you. Volunteers help people with their tickets, carrying refreshments, finding the correct theater, etc. This is always a very hectic night, we have about 40 individuals attending (ten or so of these individuals need pretty much one on one help) and there are usually 8-9 movies to choose from. We always need volunteers to join us. !!!

• I am trying to help one of the Atco associates develop a Power Point so that he can go to OU classes to talk about his life, and issues facing individuals who have disabilities. This will be a really fun activity with a very nice person. So if you know how to do Power Points I could use your help…

• We are trying to get a small Bell Choir together at Atco. If you have abilities in this regard let me know.

• Are you into music ??? Why not share this interest in a small group setting. We also need a group to help us with a fundraiser to get our Music Arts program going again.

• We need chaperones at OU basketball games. We meet at the Court Street Wendys, a half hour before the game, and walk down to the Convo together. After the game we walk back up to Wendys together where Atco associates catch their rides home. Good activity to do with a friend. Please email Jeff at bierlein@athenscbmrdd.org a few days before the game, to let me know if you can join us. Students of course get in free, OU has donated tickets for the Atco associates. We will be attending the following games:

• We are looking for a volunteer with video experience who wants to work with the Atco Video Club. The group is trying to take video and turn it into a short movie.
